Company History

Techsburg was founded in 1998 by Dr. Wing Ng (the Chris C. Kraft Endowed Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech), as a spin-off company from his university research projects. Techsburg’s early efforts focused on developing technologies in the areas of turbomachinery, propulsion, and unmanned aircraft. Sponsorship was reliant on Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR/STTR) and other grants from the federal government (DoD and NASA). However, expertise and capabilities developed from these SBIR/STTR projects spurred the growth of Techsburg’s commercial engineering services business, such that SBIR/STTR funding now accounts for only a small fraction of overall revenue.

To support these engineering projects, Techsburg cultivated in-house manufacturing capabilities, starting with a single manual vertical milling machine. The manufacturing operation eventually grew into a full-fledged commercial machine shop that is currently responsible for roughly half of Techsburg’s revenue, in addition to their original role fabricating test hardware for in-house engineering projects. Techsburg has maintained staffing of roughly 15 full-time employees over the past decade, in a nearly-even split of engineering and manufacturing personnel. This balance of world-class engineering services and in-house manufacturing capabilities will enable Techsburg to exceed customer expectations for years to come.
